The Hold

A Bere Island Art Project

Mary Sullivan, in collaboration with Bere Island Women Create and with the support of photographer Jed Niezgoda, brings to life the ways of island life and living through the lives of twenty-four Bere Island women. The book documents their unique experiences through the medium of photography and documents their journey towards creating a communal quilt during the strictest Covid-19 restrictions.

At a time when life seemed disconnected, The Hold shows the strength of rural communities, who brave isolation and loneliness all year round, regardless of the global pandemic.

The Hold is the first visual documentation of twenty-first century island women which allows the islanders themselves to take control of the narrative surrounding island life and living.
